Wyrm, it'd be like Dragon except with only three members ever and it would have none of the advantages that Dragon did so no one would ever give a shit about it. Thematically it wouldn't have any cohesive identity, and there would be no rules on what actually differentiates a Wyrm from a Dragon so people would be left wondering what the fucking point ever was.

Random (chaos?) type. Pokemon have a 40% chance of getting STAB with it, regardless of their own type. Pokemon of random type have a 40% chance of getting STAB with everything. Weaknesses and resistances are generated on the fly as attacks go out/come in, with random-typed pokemon having a 5% chance to be immune to any move, 15% chance of resisting it, and 20% chance of being weak to it, getting hit neutrally the other 60% of the time. Random-type moves hit opponents according to the same formula, with dual-type pokemon going through two checks. Random-type moves generally have a low chance of inflicting a status, but who knows what they'll be, and its weather, 'climate change', just randomly pulls a weather effect every turn for five turns. Moves like metronome, accupressure, and magnitude become this new type. smogon's O5 council immediately bans everything related to it.

honestly i could see them doing something like this as the generational gimmick, have some sort of minor sub-dragon or sub-fairy type, since there's so many mythological creatures that are similar but don't quite fit the requirements of power and danger. conversely i could see them doing a super overpowered sort of purified version of some of the types. say a 'fey' type evo for some fairy lines that is stronger and captures the otherworldly dangerous side of classical folklore fairies rather than the cute pink side that modern ones do, or a 'loong' type for a few special dragon evos or legends that are less like the western bestial dragons and lose the ice weakness or something.

Like I said, it doesn't have to be literal. Mushrooms aren't plants, but they have no problem making mushroom Pokemon grass types. Fire includes things that are just hot. "Steel" just kind of refers to metal. "Ghost" can be any sort of undead/spirit. It's about what sounds better as a name (to the target audience). Do you think kids would be more receptive to "sound" type or "wave" type?

Studious type

Would result out of some weird forced collaboration with Scholastic books. Hoothoot / noctowl would retroactively be studious / flying, drampa could be studious / dragon. Add an additional mega for Mewtwo to be studious / psychic. Some fighting pokemon that hits things with books.

Earth, Plant, and Air type, but added in alongside Rock/Ground/Grass/Flying instead of outright replacing/consolidating them.

Steam type to go along with Water and Ice, has the same offensive effectiveness as Water, but with an additional strength against Ice types, and all offensive Steam type moves have 30% chance to burn. Scald is retyped to Steam type.

Plastic type, so that now we can get a bunch of Pokemon based on discarded water bottles, old tupperware, and naked Barbie dolls. Trubbish/Garbodor retyped to Poison/Plastic. Super effective against "wildlife" types such as Normal, Water, Bug, and Flying.

A theoretical type that is both strong against and weak to every other type in the game (like Nuclear type in Pokemon Uranium).

I used to be a Soundfag until I realized it's just a component of the Normal type, just as fungi/wood also makes up a component of Grass, telepathy/comic power make up part of the Psychic type, stones/crystals make up Rock, etc.

It's more that sound is already a game mechanic as is. It's basically its own unofficial type, since it has the unique property of being able to hit through substitute, and there are a couple of abilities that hinge on the sound mechanic such as Soundproof.

True, but at the same time, Normal type's connection to sound can't be ignored. Look at the heavily sound-associated Pokemon...Jigglypuff line (there's a reason they kept the Normal type when they gained Fairy), Exploud line, but the most telling is the Pyroar line. Sure, you can say "it's an animal that has a slight Fire affinity/it's mane isn't made of Fire" or any other reasoning...but to me, what stands out, is the roaring aspect.

Good theory, but I always figured that they carelessly distributed Normal type as a secondary typing in gen 6 and 7 (Litleo, Helioptile, Drampa, Bewear) just because their dexes were so small and they wanted to introduce plenty of each type, and there wasn't enough room to have 3 or 4 pure Normal lines like past gens have done. So they had to operate on logic like "it's a fire lion, but lions are also mammals and it doesn't have any other notable secondary traits, so normal would be kinda fitting on it", or "it's a dragon, but it's old and has a beard so that's a kinda 'normal' trait I guess".

Like Bibarel, Diggersby gains its secondary type through evolution. There’s precedent there. The Heliolisk line is probably the biggest outlier here, but I think the idea is that it doesn't generate its own electricity (unlike most Electric-types) and therefore can't be considered a pure Electric type. In Bewear's case I think the Fighting type is secondary because it's a product of Bewear not knowing it's own strength, whereas Passimians typing is based on it's organization and training regime. This is obvious, but I think it's based in Drampa being a relatively unremarkable creature by Pokemon standards that only seems to use its Dragon typing in a berserk rage state. It's kind of.. grandpa first, Dragon second.
Granted, you could make a case about pretty much any typing.

Yeah like in deserts, animals and on feet. Fungi should have been poison or fairy type. They have no relation to plants in any way. Saying fungi=plants because they sometimes grow near plants is like saying flying type should be replaced with ice type because it's cold in the sky.

Nope, fungi doesn't equal plants. I was just saying I get where they were going with it. What they have now is perfect for what's supposed to be a kids game—clear and to the point.

I think we're looking at it the wrong way, though. Perhaps all the current fungusmons just so happen to be Grass-type, but NOT Grass-type BECAUSE they're based on fungi. Maybe we'll get our poison, ground, or water fungusmons someday. We've already been graced with terrestrial Pokemon that seem aquatic, wingless Flying-types, etc. (and vice-versa where applicable).
