Both are chelonians. And the linguistic distinction between turtles, tortoises and terrapins is mostly limited to English.
Most languages, like Japanese, call all chelonians "Turtles", with Tortoises being "Land Turtles", marine chelonians being "Sea Turtles", and other chelonians being "(River) turtles.

Reverse of English, iirc. In English "turtle" as a general term includes tortoises (its why we have so many tortoises that have turtle in their common name) but in Japanese the specific word is for "turtle" rather than tortoise. I could easily be wrong as my Jap is shit, so don't cite me.

I'm pretty sure GF is responsible for me not realizing this until I was an adult, I also always just assumed bats were poisonous for the same reason.

As soon as I actually thought about both it was obvious, but since it's obviously kind of a specific thought I just never bothered to question it at all until really late in my life, there's probably one or two other stupid things I may think without realizing it because of pokemon too.
