The number one factor that makes pokemon easier every generation is the access to an ever wider movepool.
You can now easily get a pokemon with 4 different types of move and incredible coverage. Then multiply that by six for the whole party.
We used to have Charizards with fire spin, flamethrower, wing attack, and slash; not an Infernape with flare blitz, thunderpunch, close combat, and stone edge. Infinite TMs means you can put Earthquake on every physical sweeper you own, and swap out moves on the fly.
This problem has been getting worse every generation.
Breeding expanded movesets in Gen 2.
Move tutors did it again in Gen 3.
Gen 4 doubled the number of TMs and added even more tutors.
Gen 5 made those TMs infinite.
