Larvitar being post game is fucking retarded because it's XP growth rate is Slow, the same as Snorlax and Chansey. If if you could catch Larvitar in Johto It isn't going to be fully evolved until level 55, and thanks to the garbage level curve you'll be lucky to hit 40 with Pupitar by the time you reach the indigo league. Gen 2 has some of the dumbest design decisions in all of pokemon.

Before shit got all complicated, and Dark was just a meta-type built to counter to Psychic, it fit perfectly.
Tyranitar has something like an unwavering mind. It gives zero fucks about anything, and just wants to fight, destroy, and move on.

It's a Kaiju. It cannot be reasoned with, or convinced to go elsewhere. It is an unfeeling force of nature, you can't use psychic energy on that.

Same reason as Mega Gyarados, Hoopa Unbound, and Guzzlord. Big ferocious monster. Could've easily been Rock/Dragon or stayed Rock/Ground, but I guess they wanted to use the new type.

Rock/Ground is a horrible defensive type, even if it's godly offensively. Tyranitar would prefer the bizarre x4 fighting weakness over dual x4 weaknesses to water and grass. Even Multiscale isn't enough to save Dragonite from some powerful Ice-type attacks, let alone a smaller boost from sand on Tyranitar.

Gen V showed that GF considers Tyranitar Godzilla, so I guess the pupae stage and turning into a different type are all kaiju movie references.

I don't think so. Even though it was pretty difficult to get a Dark type Pokemon the moves themselves were still plentiful on all sorts of other Pokemon, which isn't the case for Ghost and Dragon, the more traditional rare types.

Design-wise, there's not much that makes it Dark any more than there's anything in, say, Nuzleaf's design that screams Dark. It looks kind of scary and mean and that's it. Yeah and Goku is from a super powered godlike alien race and was trained by a super human martial artist that was hundreds of years old. Tyranitar is a 6 foot tall lizard with rock skin that an 8 year old can catch with a toy ball.

Stat-wise and lore-wise, Tyranitar is supposed to be on par with the minor gods of its world which are also typically around the size of a large person and can be caught by a child with a toy ball so it really shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Also it's based on Godzilla, a being that has survived a black hole. Scale composite Godzilla down to Tyranitar's size and I'm pretty sure he could do much more than knock over a mountain.
