The main reason is probably that the game is relatively challenging for a pokémon game, probably the hardest one to date if you don't use Exp Share. Sure it is still not hard but we're talking pokémon here.
The bloated story and lack of good dungeons inherited from SM are still big problems, even if they at least fixed Victory Road.
