I needed an excuse to complete HGSS, this'll do. There's no STABless mons in Gen 4 bar meme stuff like Magikarp, so I'll just use a regular mon (Corsola in this case) and refuse to use STAB moves.

Had to use up all of the available trainers up to Sudowoodo and buy the fire blast TM, but I finally managed without much trouble. Contemplating getting solarbeam to round my moveset off, though it might be wiser to wait until I'm done with the bulk of the dungeons

As is, there's no way for me to beat that Gastly. Corsola learns no non-STAB level up moves that can hurt it, and none of the TMs available yet are of any use. Thus, I am forced to cheat.
I'm going to cheat in the world's most inconvenient way, though.

Curse means that such a strategy isn't viable, I'd need more Super Potions than I have, along with a ton of luck. Even if I beat Gastly, Bayleef is ready to Razor Leaf me immediately after. Only way this could be possible is if Gastly refuses to use Curse for at least 25 turns, which just isn't going to happen.

Gonna have to grind it out then. Genocide your way to level 50 then nuke his party with roided out Struggle. All you really have to do is drop that Gastly ASAP. After that you can set your own pace.

I feel like grinding excessively would trivialise the rest of the game - my Ledian run came uncomfortably close to doing that because of how many optional trainers I fought. On top of that, I think overgrinding would actually make this harder, as I'd now be unable to heal back the damage done by Curse without using Recover. I'm also not sure if I have the patience to grind that much in the first place.
I'm probably just gonna pick up a Rattata that can get Gastly to kill itself by using Curse twice. It's the best option I can think of that stays somewhat true to the spirit of the run.

Whitney was an absolute cakewalk thanks to Rock typing and female gender, so I've also done Morty. He was a bit of trouble, Gengar got consistent SpD drops with Shadow Ball, but after a few attempts I got equally lucky with two freezes. It's getting late, so I'll call it quits for today.

Pyrce was somewhat straight forward, his stalling Seel caused a few problems as did bad Mud Bomb RNG, but nothing of significant concern. Chuck was a pushover. Jasmine, however, is fucking annoying. Between Supersonic and Thunder Wave eating up turns and Thunderbolt dealing half my health (OHKOing if it crits), my best chance at victory was to wait until I got lucky. Managed to win eventually, though, but only barely.

Oh god, and I thought Jasmine was bad. This Rival fight is absolutely awful. Even with an X Special and a Cheri Berry to counter Magnemite's Thunder Wave, I am at the mercy of Golbat's flinch+confusion shenanigans and random crits.
Fortunately, once that was over, there weren't too many roadblocks. Got lucky on Clair with crits, though - I imagine if that wasn't the case, I'd've had much more trouble. On my way to clip Ho-oh's wings now, then I'll deal with the E4.

I've done it for all three of my previous runs (Ledian/Butterfree/Karrablast). Usually I pick something without access to STAB at all (in Karrablast's case, I found a romhack of Red which fits this criteria), but as HGSS doesn't have such a mon (spare stuff like Magikarp) I opted to just avoid using STAB on a regular mon. It's pretty interesting to use weird collections of coverage moves instead of a more standard moveset, but it honestly doesn't feel like the mons I use are much less powerful than I'd expect (then again, I haven't done any normal runs to compare).
Ho-oh and the final johto Rival fight complete. Corsola learns Earth Power at level 53, which rounds out my coverage and will probably complete my moveset up until Red.

Thanks, turns out I bloody needed the luck. Will and Koga were fairly simple, but Bruno was absolutely awful (had to use an X Defend and 3 Hyper Potions, which I feel especially dirty about, but even with that it took me at least 20 attempts), and Karen was especially "fun", with her Double Team Umbreon, her Petal Dance Vileplume and her Destiny Bond Gengar. Nevertheless, I've got through, only one more trainer left. And an entire region, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Defeated all of the Kanto gym leaders. I left Sabrina and Erika till last as they had strong Grass coverage, ended up having to use a few X SpDs on both fights. I've given Red a bit of a shot already, but as is, I don't stand a chance. Went in prepared to have my ass handed to me by Venusaur's Frenzy Plant, only to find that Pikachu's Thunderbolt can nearly OHKO with a damage-reducing berry. I'm gonna have to grind a bit at the very least.

Red is fucking dead, at long last. This was painful to say the least. Even with the excessive levelling, I had to use a fuckton of X items and healing items. A bit of a shameful victory, but a victory nonetheless.

Managed to get to the other side of Petalburg Woods to get Bullet Seed, having only Bide against the first Youngster and the Aqua Grunt was a pain, I don't think the trainer AI in this game is sophisticated enough not to attack when the opponent used Bide (at least not this early on), but goddamn does it feel like it...
