Blastoise is cool but what's up with the evolution line? I know evolutions don't always make sense, but the blastoise line just seems way too all over the place besides being a blue tortoises.

I agree, but I don't let it bother me too much. Each design is fine from an individual standpoint, so I enjoy using Squirtle at each stage during its development no matter how wacky the progression is.
Same reason why I don't mind Fish Gun -> Octopus Tank. They're both fun.

Appearance-wise Squirtle to Blastoise makes sense to me and so does Squirtle to Wartortle, but yeah Wartortle doesn't have many features that carry over to Blastoise. It's like they introduce a lot of new stuff to just to get rid of it all at the next stage anyway.

It doesn't bother me though because all look pretty good and are still clearly the same line.

Wartortle is the best looking one and the only one with an actual mythological basis to its design and not just "cartoon turtle" or "turtle with random canons slapped down"

Blastoise was designed first by Tajiri, the other 2 were designed near the end of Red and Green's development by Nishida and the design was modified by Sugimori. There was almost 2 years between the 2; Blastoise was part of the original Capsule Monsters pitch but the other 2 were not (this was even before evolution was considered a key game mechanic)

If you mean quality-wise, fine, that's subjective, but Wartortle has everything Squirtle has while Blastosie is missing the swirl in Squirtle's tail.

i meant quality wise. If it is true that blastoise was designed by a different person than the other two it makes sense, because it is clear he was trying to build towards something else with Wartortle. I like the cartoon turtle look.

They're turtles that shoot water from their shells. When they don't have extra water jets to shoot water out of their shells, they have tails that represent water shooting out of its shell.

Squirtle and Wartortle were designed by Nishida, who also designed Charmander, Charmeleon, Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur were designed by someone else.
