I'm still of the belief Gen 7 as a whole was supposed to be the first foray onto the Switch. But the stupid "muh 20th anniversary" BS meme had them release it too early.

It was probably supposed to go Z/third Kalos version after ORAS, then LGPE as a final hurrah for the handheld era (it would make far better sense, as a means of coming full circle), before jumping to the Switch with Alola.

I don't think there was any major change in plans. I think the 3ds games all came out as intended, XY > ORAS > SM.
Game Freak simply underestimated their workload, and overestimated their own competence, and everything came out rushed and incomplete as a result.

Good enough for me.
Also, I think the obvious reason we never got a "Z' version was because Zygarde didn't have a split form gimmick like Kyurem and Necrozma. It's clear now that GF isn't going back to single third versions when they can make more money by selling two.

X and Y play basically like traditional pokemkn games, almost completely. It's an extremely natural move from BW while Sun/Moon are entirely redesigned from the formula up. Like no gym leaders and the island instead of land region.
I think the only real fuckery is X/Y's obvious third title being canned so sun/moon could release a year early. They shoved half the unresolved stuff like zygarde onto it.
But because it was so rushed most of the actual content only exists in us/um. Their schedule is so fucked that LGPE was a mess as well.
They need to push 2019 to 2020. If they dont at this rate 2019 pokemon is gonna be total shit, worse than anything before. Metroid prime 4 beta tier.

Nah, Z version definitely got shitcanned. There'd be no reason for Zygarde or its forms to exist at all if a Z version wasn't planned at some point. When it was canned, Zygarde's story was left to the anime, and its forms were unceremoniously shoehorned in Gen 7.

But a "Z" version would just as fine as the anniversary game(s) and we still would bought S/M afterwards anyway. Also get that the anime was supposed the resolve the storyline, that's fine. Yet not only do they just shove it up in gen 7 but in the last two games, during the end-fucking-credits they parade Zygarde into Resolution Cave like they're gonna do something with it. TL;DR: GF needs to stop teasing and building up Zygarde if they're not going to do anything with it.

If there was ever any Z version, it never left drawing board. Zygarde and all the other abandoned subplots weren't intentionally put off for a third version that got cancelled, they were simply cut because Game Freak couldn't fit them in XY due to deadlines and general incompetence.
