While may is very stocky and chubby everywhere. You can try and argue that it was because of the older art style, but Misty isn't that way in the anime at all(which is were Mayfags like to cite her body type because in the games she was straight up fat and blocky)
They even retconned May into a thin girl with a bit of a chest in ORAS, probably because her fat figure wouldn't sell anything especially in Japan nowdays
