My friend and I had an argument about two days ago.
Which art style do you guys prefer? OS, XY, or SM’s?
Personally, I loved the art of the original series the most. My friend thinks CY still the best the series has ever looked.

XY is a generic moe anime style. OS feels at home with Dragonball and other old anime of the era that Pokemon was conceptualized in. Remember that Pokemon began development in 1991 - it was more closely related to FFI than FFVII.

XY had horrible color design and PS2 quality 3D backgrounds that mixed badly with 2D. BW and XY just have that generic mass produced morning cartoon feel you see in every toy anime and I hate it.
My favorite styles and art directions are OS, SM and Advanced Generation. Least liked are BW and XY.
Changing Jessie's hair from cherry red to pink was a mistake btw.

This is the only correct opinion. XY had god tier battles (minus the typical ashpulls, the famous one being "USE X SCISSOR ON TRICK ROOM") but everything else was a corny, poorly written snoozefest.
If you want to watch XY, only watch the episodes with the battles. That's it.
If I could go back in time and stop myself from watching it all I would.

XY looks better than OS, though it's close and I had to think about it a bit. The characters look horrible in SM. By far the worst they've ever looked, especially Ash. I hope they fix it for the Gen 8 anime.

I felt like the character designs were at their best in DP. It kept the simplistic 90s OS style, but looked sharp and nice. I also really liked the use of thick lines in some of their cut-ins, gives it a sort of manga-like feel. The backgrounds in DP were atrocious though, I don't know what was up with that.

XY is probably the best in average quality, but I still can't get used to little things like Ash having brown irises, it just looks weird to me.

Pokemon has cost-saving measures all over the fucking place and it's fair to point those out, but I don't know what you're expecting beyond the gif posted. XY has its moments of laughable animation, but in general it was probably the best at disguising them. Animation is just the illusion of movement, after all.

I always see people complaining about Ash's eyes having brown irises, but I've liked them ever since I saw the commercial for the Gen 5 anime. I also thought the little tufts of hair in front of his ears they added in XY was a further upgrade.

It's a shame they completely trashed Ash's design in SM. The thing that bothers me the most about it is how they made the lines on his cheeks so huge and squiggly.

His DP design was probably the most robust, he didn't look skinny like in OS and XY, a midget like BW or a fattie like SM.

But unfortunately I can't remember how was his farewell to Dawn, just that the way she acted in Unova was for some reason OoC for me.

What are you talking about? BW and XY were very shameless and didn't bother to disguise their low budget animation. Lots of tines during XY they would animate a single walk or run loop and then zoom and drag from point A to point B, it was like the shit that happened with the Berserk anime but with 2D. Also there are episodes they would reuse the same cut around a dozen of times.

BW and XY were unwatchable from an animation stand point unless you wanted to laugh or feel second hand embarrassment, specially the fillers. I recently caught the twins episode of BW and it was sad.

Yes I can. Because every other single saga has the same garbage animation and choreography style and DP was the only one that showed hints at doing something smarter.
