Hey, a few more things from a native who lives in da north
The mining ore scene is massive up here, was a major industry until politics put it in a on/off state depending on who is in charge, but that's no fun, its a major part of the culture, called "The Iron range".
Logging is a mainstay, recreationally, domestically and for exports. This hasn't been explored in many mon games, and could be great worldbuilding, as companies regularly cut and plant in 20 year cycles to keep the tree population healthy. estimated that over 30% of the forests not near federal highways are logged on commercial or public land. Also some massive machines for villans to play with too.
Ah yes, the water. We have lake superior, the inland ocean, with massive ships that rival battleships to haul the cargo in and out of port in Duluth, Silver bay, Beaver bay and a few other smaller towns that process iron ore. this will not be The first land locked region of the game.
There may be a distinct lack of aquatic animals due to winters constraints on energy and adaption, but that doesnt mean there isnt lakes, and people bored and hungry enough to go on them frozen and play hockey or ice fish. In the summer the ice melts away, but its still fun and food on the lake. almost all towns in minnesota are built off of highways, lakes, or rivers for this reason.
Even though the glaciers bulled everything over, so there is not much elevation change or super scenery differences from place to place, its the trailblazing and open wilderness, not dense with people that will lure you in.
Yea i grew up here in the sticks. Even tapped sugar maples for surup for a few years, before the machenery went bad and we decided it wasnt worth the hassle. would adore a real or modded region based off the midwest, as WI or MN would be ideal, due to culture and the Great Lakes.
