Just what generation did you straight up lose interest in Pokemon? The excitement of a new Pokemon game coming out was gone.

For me it was the 3rd generation.

I am a Pokéfag since Red/Blue, in 1999. I was 9 years old. I was born in the Pokémania, molded by it. I even bought a bootleg copy of Pokémon Silver (with a translation similar to "Vietnamese Crystal") to play it before it came out in my country.

Ruby/Sapphire was a weird time, full of changes for the sake of changes (anime, manga, TCG), and subpar main games. Emerald fixed a lot of things, but R/S were the first games in removing things from previous ones (night/day, PokéGear, backwards compatibility...).

I quitted playing Pokémon during Generation 3. Then, Diamond and Pearl came out, I played it on my cousin's DS and was like "WHAT THE FUCK", now Special and Physical mean something, this might be great.

I sold a lot of Playstation 2 games (A LOT) to gather enough money to buy a Nintendo DS and a Pokémon Diamond, and I had a blast. WAY better than Gen 3. Then Platinum came and fixed whatever issues I had with Diamond.

Then HGSS. Best remakes ever. Even if they recicle the Battle Frontier from Platinum, they are filled with content. Pokéthlon should be a staple of the series, btw.

And then, Black/White. This is what Pokémon should be. For the first time since Gen 2 I had the impression of starting an adventure and not knowing what would I find. BW2 was a nice addition with its extra postgame, but BW in my opinion was the greatest. Old players had to play with the new Pokémon, that made it even with new players, as for them, all Pokémon were new. Then, when you beated the game, you had access to all the others. It was the perfect solution.

But no, fucking genwunners had to complain, and so we got the blandest shit ever: Generation 6.

This is where Pokémon jumped the shark. Megaevolutions had great potential, but were given mostly to Pokémon that didn't need them. Fairy type is a joke, that broke the somewhat balance (for fucks sake, the only problem with Dragon was Outrage, just nerf it). The games were rushed. (cont)

XY's first 3 badges felt it like the game could still be good. Yes, you had these friends that stopped you every 3 seconds, and BLATANT Kanto pandering, to the point of copypasting Viridian Forest and scripting the first encounter in the game to be a Kanto mon to not scare genwunners.

But after the 3rd badge, everything rushes up. You get introduced AZ, which does nothing in the game, you are shown the electrical plants, which do nothing, gym leaders are just there, the "biomes" change from one route to another without any sense...

Also, it could have looked way better, but they got lazy with 3D models, and now we will have those models until the end of time, because unlike sprites, you can get away with recycling them ad infinitum.

Then ORAS. Didn't help that they were a remake of the worst generation, they had to go the extra mile and take away things.

Gen 6 is the low point of the series. Until USUM and Let's Go.

SM were kinda fine, albeit very linear and cluttered with too many unskippable cutscenes. But more or less, the games are okay.

USUM are a rehash, a cashgrab. They didn't fix anything and even made things worse, like story. Ultra change my ass.

And Let's Go is for babies. If you liked it and don't wear diapers, you have a problem

This threw me away so hard I didn't even bothered buying the next games which was a fuckin mistake because those are the best entries in the franchise. I instead got them on a linker which allowed me to cheat as much as I wanted but still, did not bought it untill recently when I finally found one copy in a local game store.

Kalos was nothing like Alola. They only stop you a handful of times outside normal story events which would've dragged you in anyway so they can't be counted.

I'm from real life kalos and relatively to the map, the biomes are absolutely on point.
Also, no shit the games lagged, the models were so high res, they should not even be used on switch as is.

I only started playing the games in 2007 starting with Emerald, played Diamond next and all the others too. I didn't like the way XY was shaping up, (I don't have a problem with megas) I was pretty disappointed with the game. ORAS hype was 100% but came down near release because of what we lost. I didn't come to /vp/ in 2015. I liked the gen 7 hype and the games are good.

Pokemon taught me how to read. I've been here since the start and recognize it as part of the things that made me 'me'. I actually was pretty OK with X/Y. It was something legit new and the stuff it tried to do at least made it feel livable. Hated the clear favor of 'focus on the OP mons only that can't go wrong'. Then, then came ORAS. Then came 7. At first I was excited again, exploring all the new content and great things about it. Then USUM happened. NOthing changed. Nothing literally changed, and Necrozma? Why didn't you just give it a full form to start with? You already broke the game in X/Y and ORAS with mega legendaries, did you suddenly decide to try and slap on duct tape to a broken dam hole?

I have sworn several times in the past month as a precaution. That I would not buy anymore if Gen VIII aren't spectacular from the get-go. I've never seen a company that says to NOT have expectations for a fucking game. EA, Activision, they at least try to believe in their shitty products no matter how scumfuck they are. GameFreak saying 'don't get your hopes too high' while having the money the latter two could only dream of is a fucking sick joke.

Generation 6. Then directly after, Generation 7 killed it for me for good. They got one more shot left, after that I have Digimon and other games to play. Even if I still get the urge, there's Showdown and just seeing it all through YT vids and sites like Serebii's outdated bullshit.

I have had such fond memories with Pokemon. Up and to including playing them while they really were in full swing. Pokemon cards were hype, anime was hype, all that crap. Here in 2019, after broken promise after broken promise, I don't feel like it's the game series I grew up with. They tried before Gen VI. I don't have any hope for Gen VIII. My expectations are only in the Pokemon list.

I advise you to drop it if it's fucking terrible and find other games, other hobbies, other anything. Don't let yourself be bitter over this. Have fun with other shit and watch this ship sink. It's better for the board, and better for us all.

XY was the start of the end for me. I was never convinced about the jump to 3D models because I didn't like how they looked like. At the moment I was hopeful, but not convinced. There's also the whole thing with megas, which I remember divided the board 50/50 on the matter. To this day I think they were a mistake because the Pokemon franchise had managed to keep a unique identity with their world building, avoiding the usual shit other "monster" games like do. That was until then.
When they actually came out I was heavily disappointed with the execution of those 2 things, and then there's streamlining and the casualization.

The last time I felt hype was when ORAS were confirmed. While I started with Crystal as a kid, I passed my early teenager years replaying RSE over and over on an emulator.
I should've known better considering they were coming out in the same generation as XY.

By the time Alola came I just didn't have it in me to have hype at all. And as expected, GF is more concerned about introducing more "mega-like" gimmicks that take away from Pokemon unique identity rather than putting actual effort and gameplay quality. Not to mention the Alola dex is mediocre as fuck with only a few lines worth saving.
And now we got LGPE, which apparently is decently successful on the west and some retards here are celebrating it, not realizing we all lost against kanto pandering.

In retrospective, I don't even dislike Kalos anymore: at the moment of gen6 I just didn't think it could get worse than that. But looking back what XY did was tame in comparison to where the franchise seems to be headed now.

B/W was kinda everything I ever wanted out of Pokemon and hoped that it'd be the path forwards for the franchise but seeing the sequels and X/Y downplaying the choices it made was just incredibly disheartening. I had fun with S/M though [that pic of Lunala holding Lillie is just such a fucking gutwrencher] but I dipped out of US/UM after seeing how little it added. I'm really hoping Gen VIII can give me that B/W feeling again.

When I saw that Black and White wouldn't have anything from other games until after the elite 4, judging by the shit looking designs I thought it would be very bad to play through so I never got it. Then I didn't get a 3DS until 2016.

Playing through Heart Gold the third time, during that Lighthouse Ampharos quest, a cold draft blew in from the sea and all of my enjoyment just died at once.

Was so disappointed with Gen 4 that I was about to drop Pokemon entirely, had interest completely revitalised and stronger than ever as of Gen 5 (in part thanks to HGSS, but mostly Unova). Was apprehensive about buying a Gen 6 game since the 3D chibi look was off-putting and I wasn't sure how GameFreak would handle the rest of the game and ended up not getting it after seeing what was there post-release. Haven't bought a game since, but I don't think I'll ever leave the franchise - the Pokemon are the most important thing and they're still coming.

I was beyond hyped for these fucking games. So much so that I made RPG Maker "demos" of things I hoped to see in them. I emulated Black as soon as the Japanese rom went up, but stopped before the first badge because I wanted to experience it on hardware. I even preordered White instead of just buying it like I did every other game I've ever owned. I was incredibly excited to explore an all-new region, using all-new Pokemon.

And it sucked. I ran out of things to do a day after I beat the game. Pearl gave me hundreds upon hundreds of hours of playtime. White gave me less than 100. I swore off Pokemon altogether until ORAS appealed to my nostalgia and I caved in and bought it, and holy fuck I regretted skipping out on XY.

No, there was just a lot of depth to DPPt. From the various bonuses you got from having gen 3 games in Slot 2, to contests, to secret bases in the underground, even shit like collecting all of the Poketch apps and making your own ball capsules, there was a lot of shit to keep one occupied.

I started with RB, I was even one of those kids who got the "sneak peek at pokemon" VHS tape in the mail. I never completely lost interest but I was severely disappointed with Ruby/Sapphire after playing GSC. I was bummed that I couldn't transfer my old Pokemon but that wasn't even the problem. It felt like things went backwards when things like day/night were removed and I didn't think the plot made much sense at all. When emerald finally came out it redeemed this gen for me.
I never felt that kind of disappointment again until Gen 6. I was waiting for it to be redeemed but instead we just got even crappier remakes of the other worst generation.
Gens 2 and 5 were the best to me by far and I really hope gen 8 can come close.

Seventh. I enjoyed the competitive aspect of X/Y, where I spent quite some time. I didn't buy ORAS, but I bought Sun/Moon. I found the latter hardly playable because of the frequent cutscenes and handholding. Then I didn't bother with US/UM nor LGPE.
Unless they surprise me with the next games and they don't feel like a soap opera or a barely interactive gallery exposition don't I won't spend my money and time in any upcoming games.

There is a difference between excitement and Interest anon. If we lost interest, we would just simply show apathy to the franchise.

It is still hard to feel excitement about the next upcoming games sense I still expect Game Freak to fuck it up like they did with the 3DS games.

however, since you took the time to acknowledge my joke, I'll give you that I spent a fair time on Diamond too before being massively fed off it. I think my main problem with it was the fact that it did the same thing than the previous one but worst, which is somewhat a recurring theme here.

I think that your error was choosing white which was the "assisted" version while the black one was the "challenge" version. but even then, the massive postgame was in black2, this thing kept me occupied for a while.

I played Black and Black 2, gave up after i beat the league because they where boring and the content compared to HGSS and DP wasn't there, i got a 3DS for ZeldaAttP and after i saw fucking Mega Blastoise i have to get the games, XY where better games when it came to the design of the Pokemon and the Megas where pretty cool but how in the fuck they manage to make less content than in BW and BW2 is beyond me, after the trailer for ORAS i just gave up entirely on the games, now days i just in because the TCG is funner than ever and the Poke Girls are super cute and funny..
Top peak Pokemon for me was with gen 4.

i haven't totally lost interest, since i still care about the new pokemon that get added every generation. also, if they ever start releasing new mystery dungeon games again, i'll always play those.
that being said, i lost all hope for mainline pokemon in gen 6. when their response to the backlash towards gen 5 was to dumb down the games and pander to kanto as much as possible, that's when i knew it was all over.
unsurprisingly, what came after xy has been even worse. oras was a horrible remake that removed content. sun/moon was a full-blown "cinematic experience." it was the exact same thing that western studios get shit on for, but even worse, due to the garbage graphics, framerate, animations and writing. after all the hype about "ultra changes," usum was just overpriced dlc. and the less said about lgpe, the better.
anyone who honestly thinks that gen 8 will be any good is just deluding themselves. just look at the sales figures for the 3ds games and lgpe, and see how they've been rewarded for rushing out lazy, shitty products. look at how game freak is complaining about how it's hard to develop for the switch and begging people to keep their expectations low. it's going to be a disaster, but idiots will buy it anyway and encourage more of the same.
bottom line: you all should have listened to the kid on the playground who insisted that digimon was the greatest thing ever, or the weebs who loved persona 3. pokemon needed actual competition to progress and improve. without that... well, the quality of the recent games says it all.

3 as well. I didn’t play Pokemon again until nostalgia got me interested in Sun/Moon, and I quickly lost interest again after the announcement of Let’s Go. Only really checking this board now for news on Gen 8. If it turns out to be more Let’s Go, then I’ll likely be done with the franchise for good.

Gen 4. I loved Gen 3, played Sapphire and Emerald so many times that I lost count. When Gen 4 came in, it felt weird. After first Gym, I dropped Pearl because the game didn't had the same sparkle as Hoenn. I played HGSS in a emulator a when it came because Silves was the game I played most, but still felt weird. I abandoned Pokemon and only came back with ORAS. It brought back all those feelings with the remake, so I decided to give a chance to the games I skipped. BW felt great, It was truly a refreshing game and I will certainly go back to replay it some day. But DPPt still feel like a drag, I played recently but game made me lose interest.

As for SM/USUM, it was a surprise. I loved the region, and that made me like the games a lot. I just wish there was a bit more of post-game content.

Never. My parents didn't buy me DPPT, HGSS, BW, B2W2, XY, nor Sun and Moon. I missed out on all of those games until I got turned like 19 and bought all of the games I missed out on. I have never not wanted to play, just didn't have access to them during those generations.

Played emerald first and still feels like the best game period. Then gen 4 came out which was also great. I was a bit reluctant at HGSS, but it ended up being amazing. Then gen 5 came where some of the mons were literal trash, but my brother showed me the game and let me played his. Then i realized it's pretty amazing.

However Gen 6 just ruined everything. Shilled charizard/beginning of starter wars and extreme favoritism. Shilled other shillmons. No content. Easy game. Ruined storyline. Powercreeps. ORAS being far worse than emerald. Fortunately USUM doesnt seem that bad and I'm trying the games now
