>>37486868I don't mind simple designs(designs like Golduck, Ninetales, Ditto, etc are great), its the shamefully lazy evolutions like making Pidgeotto but bigger + different plumage, Diglett but three for no reason, Poliwhirl but with an altered physique and facial expression, etc. Since the franchise was on it's roots when depicting their concepts back then, they shat out what they felt like shitting out, instead having second thoughts when it came to making evolutions allot more striking. Since evolutions are becoming less like "pre evo but with few tweaks", most Gen 1 evo lines feel less like "complete" designs and more like a visual idea you would see from a concept sheet.
While Gen 1 had drastic changes (the first two monsters I brought up, Raticate, Dragonite, etc.), some of the ones that weren't played a little too safe.
Compare the Grimer line to it's Alolan counterpart for instance or hell even the Diglett line. They're more willing to make evolutions interesting while still being obviously related.
