VAST improvement over the shitty region that came right before it. Truly unique locations unlike Hoenn that flip flopped between lush forested areas and rocky areas with a fuck ton of water thrown in, nice music.

Sinnoh has all of those things. The "brown rocks and dirt" you are talking about are exclusive to a mountain and the rock gym city. You have sea ports, resorts, flowery meadow towns, industrial mines, snowy paths, foggy and mysterious paths, a lush forest, swamp, several lakes, sandy beaches, etc.

Sinnoh has pretty good level design but requires HMs too much and is the worst for it. It's also visually bland, with only a few areas that particularly stand out, mostly the snowy ones. I get they wanted a rugged isolated area and they did a good job, but it means areas often felt a bit samey compared to Hoenn.

Victory Road in particular was pretty shit. Not only is the lead up to it almost exactly the same as Hoenn's (water route leading to an island hosting VR and the E4 that you reach by scaling a waterfall) but it's just another generic cave in a game full of caves. I can't tell you how happy I was that they started making Victory Roads more distinct in Gen 5 onwards. Gen 4's Victory Road lead up to the league was the most underwhelming besides Johto, but at least in Johto you went to Kanto and there was a reveal about it.
