Is this game really worth buying?

I hate Pokémon Go with all my heart, I hate the growing casualization and I've been losing faith in the series since Gen 6.
Despite all of that, this game looks fun and cute and might make me have a good time. Is it worth it?

It doesn't resemble Pokemon GO in any way apart from overworld encounters and the throwing mechanic (the former being a huge improvement for Pokemon as a whole). If you like Pokemon, you'll have fun with this. It's nothing revolutionary but it's still Pokemon at its core.

If you think of it as a spin-off, in the same way that Mystery Dungeon, Rumble, Conquest or whatever are, then it's fantastic and probably the best spinoff ever.

If you take it as a main series game (which, officially, is what it is), it's a mess which cuts out more features than any other main-series game, with a boring region and adds nothing to the battle system.

Yeah, I thought it would be like that. If I go in just thinking of strolling through Kanto completing the Pokédex and not taking it very seriously I might just get it.

Can agree with that, I thought Pokémon walking around the overworld would be stupid but it ended up being the main thing I liked about the game.

Just fix the capture mechanic to not just be Wii Sports Baseball pitching with extra RNG, and it'd be good.

That's pretty much my main hope for Gen 8, retain the overworld mechanic but revert the encounter system to its old self. The motion control mechanic for throwing Pokeballs in and of itself is fine, but it shouldn't have to be shoehorned in as the ONLY way to capture Pokemon.
