What games reference the first game in their series as much as XY and SM do to Kanto? We're talking shit like making new areas identical to Kanto areas for no reason, or ripping off events from Kanto wholesale.

The closest I can think of is FFIV The After Years to FFIV, and that game was shit, partially because half the plot was "homages" to the first game that consided of ripping off whole scenes and plot points while making way less sense.

Because until black/white, every gen had Kanto, either as a game or post-game. Not only that, but for the ones after b/w, they also felt the need to "pay homage" to the first gen games, pretty blatantly, too.
There's acknowledging your roots and being proud of them, and there's showing them off every goddamn single time; just like repeating the same joke over and over, to the same public, expecting them to still find it funny.

I don't have much of a problem with Kanto pandering, it's nice that they pay respects to their roots; however I would appreciate it if we got more creativity instead of "Oh, a new Pokemon forms, let's give them to Kanto Pokemon only", like I'd really would've liked to see how, for instance, an Alolan Axew or an Alolan Ursaring would've looked like.
