Why can’t Latiases be male?

Most Pokémon can be either male or female except for Latias. Anyone else finds this strange?

Also, Latios isn’t his male counterpart since they’re completely different Pokémon with completely different stats

So Nidoran male and female aren't opposite gender counterparts?

The Nidos and Volbeat/Illumise can be bred and you will get both genders of Nido and either Volbeat or Illumise for the other two. This even works by Dittoing the male. The Nidos are the same creature and Volbeat/Illumise are the same creature.

They are. It's an official work, so it's canon. You might be able to isolate it as only applying to the anime world, though. Most of the other official products assert Latios and Latias as the male and female of each other, though. I cannot find verification in the games other than the matter that their Megas are the same, save for eye color.

Not in the games' mechanics, but the games DO state that they travel in herds and is implied that they mate with individuals from other sibling pairs.
