It was retconned from the Pokemon itself exploding to it causing an explosion around itself that it gets caught in too

It's similar to Vegeta's Final Atonement. You're able to use a set amount of energy/electricity to create an outward explosion. They generate enough to render themselves unconscious rather than outright killing them.

For Voltorb/Electrode its likely a result of them being a failed Pokeball experiment and not a natural defensive evolution or fighting/mating evolutionary trait that say the Geodude line has.

Not him, but explosion is energy generated outside of the body, self destruct is energy generated inside of the body and then outward.

It's virtually the same move, its just whether its generated within or outside of them.

They change the history all the time, make shit that wasn't cannon cannon, or simple just do something stupid to sell more. That latest movie is the perfect example of this, they simply rewrote the sayajins history so they can make more anime episodes.
