>>37504338A good character is a character who creates the emotions they're supposed to create. A character who's meant to be unlikeable isn't bad because you don't like them, because that's their purpose.
N, while not what I'd call successful, at least does a good job at coming across as vaguely insane. His hypocricy is a part of his character, it's meant to cement your feelings towards him as an antagonist. That being said, I think his character starts to become bad once you've defeated Ghetsis (carrying into B2W2).
If you want truly awful characters, just look at characters like:
>Gen 3 rival - meant to be your friend, but nothing more than a thorn in your back (but hey, at least they're not...)>Gen 6 rivals - the term "friend" must be very loose at Game Freak>Hau - he's got a bit of a cult following, apparently, but even in those areas, it's clear that despite the intention meaning to be "wow you're such good friends!" it comes across more like "wow i'm such a dick for kicking this guy into the dirt", much like the primary gen 6 rival>Lilly - I ROVE YOU RIRRIE-CHANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN>Lysandre - I don't think anybody exists who can take this character seriously, despite the game clearly trying to be serious. The only reason he's not irredeemable is because he's one of the few characters who actually does something to say "look i'm not all bark", but I must emphasise that this is the only reason.>Diantha - Who?>Marlon - Meant to be this carefree guy, just comes across as a dick.>Hugh - Lies somewhere between Gen 3 rival and Gen 6 rivals on the "I'm not your friend" scale.>Cynthia - She evidently does something right, but I feel that she does nothing to cement herself as this powerful, inspiring trainer until her champion battle.>Cyrus - I put this guy here with extreme caution. It feels like the game is sometimes willing to take a step back and look at how silly it is, but he is awfully serious for a "i am going to take over the universe" villain.
