Why the fuck did he win in the end? All cards were played against him, how can Masuda and Sakurai honestly have seen this piece of shit and thought "let's make it a shillmon"? Anyone with a normal brian thinks it looks like shit.

Sakurai was sent reference sheets, and he ultimately narrowed it down to Decidueye and Incineroar. He chose the latter because it had a more interesting fighting style.

Decidueye failed, Primarina is "too feminine" for mass appeal, Lycancucks were failures and Bewear/Mimikyu/Koko have too specific roles to be broadly applied in different medias. The competition wasn't fit and Incineroar got lucky with Sakurai's blessing, nothing more to it.

Problem is they didn't become relevant until the introduction of Dusk (AKA Ash-Lycanroc).

Those sheets that leaked are what Sakurai was working with.

Compare Decidueye's sheet to Incineroar's, and you'll see why Sakurai picked him. His is a lot more detailed than Decidueye's.

Dusk was their downfall. They're still popular designs, mind you, and already were before Dusk was revealed but Dusk puts too much precedence on itself for the other forms to have a chance while also not being anything special enough to warrant said status. It literally cucked its other forms while not being successful in its own right.

No, he did not. All that we can assume about the interviews is that Sakurai seriously considered both Incineroar and Decidueye, with him already having ideas on how Decidueye's projectiles would work. In the end, he picked Incineroar because he wanted to make a pro-wrestler. I'm ok with this since playing against projectile heavy characters can be a pain and Incineroar is my favorite starters. But don't make up lies, Anon.

We have yet to see a proper archer in smash. Having one move where you shoot an arrow doesn't make a character an "archer" anymore than having a single projectile makes a character a dedicated zoner.

Link is a sword character with TONS of different gear. Pit uses daggers more than anything else.

I fucking hate Decidueye but "too many archers" is not a valid argument at all. K. Rool has a backbreaker. Does that means he's a wrestler character? Guess Incelroar is redundant.

I agree. Although, there's a ton of projectile spammers in Smash Bros already. While there isn't a lot of slow heavies. Incineroar definitely brought in more new stuff than Decidueye would have.
