pokemon is, believe or not, stupid fucking hard to program
imagine programming 750 plus playable characters in your game with shitloads of moves to choose from and the opponents also use the same characters against you.

Have you ever 3D modeled?
Modeling, and even worse, rigging each and every one of those can be a bitch.
Then you have to give them all unique animations for pokemon refresh.
At least in gen 7 they got it out of the way, I hope they don't focus on that so much next gen and just reuse the ones they made.
The programming is the easy part.

While you have a point, to make a Pokemon clone you don't need 3D models. Even for Pokemon itself, 3D models is a relatively new thing, at least for the main games. Especially since retro styles are coming back, you could definitely get away with 2D instead.

This is gonna sound fanboyish but pokemon is perfect for what it is.
The type system allows the gameplay to be easily understood, pokemon have simple designs and there's also a variety of cute, cool or weird mons to appeal to a variety of tastes.

It's hard for others to get it right, they tend to have short lived gimmicks (like only using robots, dinosaurs. or have a complex breeding system like Jade Cacoon)
