Do we really need two versions nowadays? It made sense at the time when link cables were a thing but with GTS, wifi events and whatnot, getting exclusives is a non-issue.

I don't mind paired versions for original releases but do third versions need pairs too? BW2 and USUM should've been one version.

Most people don't buy both versions. They buy what version has exclusives they buy the best, or the opposite version of what their friends have.

It's entirely a business thing. They could just let you pick which set of "version"-exclusive Pokemon you want when you start a new game, but that wouldn't make as much money.

Gen 5 at least had actual version differences beyond the encounter tables. I think it's the only gen where a single third version would've seemed odd.

BW2 had to be 2 versions because they were actual sequels to the prior games, which had story differences based on version.

Yes, what we don't need is them releasing incomplete games once a year.

Two versions every 5 years or so to make a feature complete game alongside a pair of (again, feature complete) remakes or something using that engine a year or two later would be ideal but there should be no other follow ups that aren't side series.

The third version cucks you of certain lines just to fuck you over. At least Wifi already existed for Gen 4 but it was still primitive and you need to have seen that Pokemon in battles.

White and Black are fundamentally different post-game, White Forest is just more valuable and has better selection of Unova Pokemon than Black. It has more easily accessible previous generation Pokemon while Black City is just a meme Battle Tower with nothing else to do.

White 2 and Black 2 are the same but just like the third version of previous generations both games cuck you out of certain Pokemon only seen in Black/White. This time Black 2 is more valuable thanks to Challenge Key and having better version exclusives than White 2 (who only had Braviary at this point).

Yep. There are so many other ways to "encourage trading" than to hold a select few pokemon hostage. Even if all version exclusives were eliminated, you still can't get plenty of gen 1 pokemon without trading, machamp, gengar, alakazam, golem, both fossils, all 3 starters, all eeveelutions, and trading still makes it easier to get rare pokemon even if it's possible for you to get it yourself.

And version exclusives aren't even good incentives for long term trading, you just trade once and never need to do it again, as opposed to trading for hidden abilities, pokeballtism, items, IVs, etc.

And finally, GAMEFREAK DOESN'T GIVE A FUCK IF YOU ARE TRADING OR NOT, THEY JUST WANT MORE MONEY.

what if they made a single version but each save file at the start randomized which Pokemon could be caught so it wasn't always the same (some files would generate growlithe, some meowth, some generate both but no ekans etc.). then you could still force the trading factor for sharing and social purposes. it also doesn't discount the idea of a definitive version for a gen either

I'd honestly prefer the current system. I like making my teams ahead of time, that would make me sad if I got like 15 hours in and found out a pokemon was excluded.

Like I said above, there are so many other ways to encourage trading than holding some pokemon hostage. I guarantee only like 1% of all trades on GTS are for version exclusives, and instead are for rare pokemon, shinies, legendaries, etc.
