As well-deserved as its infamy is, it's a great fangame and the extremely rare Essentials game that doesn't have glaring polish issues. Field effects are genius and I wish more games fanmade or not would adopt them. It's hard to believe it started before even gen 5 but now has everything up to 7 except Meltan and Melmetal when the dev originally said she didn't want to add more pokemon after gen 6.

I heavily disagree. I had gotten far more enjoyment out of fucking Uranium of all games. Uranium may have really badly designed fakemon and a broken nu-type, but it doesn’t try to be obscenely edgy, pandering to lgbt to the outrageous extent that reborn does (Uranium has a neutral gender PC trainer, that is plenty), and it doesn’t enforce artificial difficulty by giving you shitmon that you’re stuck with while other trainers and gyms have rediculously good Pokemon with amazing type coverage. Say what you will about Uranium attempting to shill out on patreon (and to which I will say that thy deserved to get shut down for), but Uranium is easily the better crafted game on essentials. At least from my experience.

Absolutely none of what you said has anything to do with what makes Reborn a good Essentials game. Reborn has a painstaking attention to detail for things in regular pokemon games and romhacks that Essentials won't do for you on its own. One of these things, which I recall Uranium lacks, is that every or at least almost every move has a proper animation. Even the next most polished Essentials games like Phoenix Rising still have most moves look like Tackle.

Reborn has great aesthetics. The art and music are great. Everything else. Literally everything else about it is trash. Trash of the highest caliber. The most bulshit being that in an RPG you have to de level your team because being stronger than her OCs are not allowed. I wanted to continue to at least see where the story was going but it just kept getting worse and worse to the point I just dropped it and I recommend no one else pick it up.

Anon, I am not talking about game design. I am referring specifically to its aesthetic polish as it relates to Pokemon Essentials. Many Essentials games have the generic default Essentials intro that's supposed to look like the one from FRLG. Many fangames have the default Essentials music that's from the official games but in the RPG Maker XP soundfont, and many even use music from the RPG Maker XP RTP. Many fangames use the default RPG Maker XP battle victory fanfare. Many Essentials games have janky sprites and animations. These, and many other minor visual/auditory details inherent to Essentials, are not present in Reborn.

I heard that the characters in Pokemon Reborn are based on roleplaying characters from the mid 2000s, if that's the case, it explains certain...edgeness with some of the characters. I believe the game itself could have had a better story if it headed in an original direction by itself like most other fangames.

Only added 100 new pokemon, 2 are post game legends, 3 are part of a trio + 1 more is "cover" legend which kinda makes it less then 100 regular mons, but man the region and how faithful it stayed to gen VI era was appreciated in contrast to all the grimdark games.

My problem with the delta mons is that went OVERBOARD with them. So many Pokémon had delta forms, it’s ridiculous. The regi trio had one and some had fucking two (Metagross, Sunflora)

Except they didn't properly update that mode in the update that finished the story so after the sixth gym it goes back to being randomly edgy again even if you are on Light mode.

I'm nuzlocking Solar Light and Lunar Dark right now and it's pretty solid all around. The fakemon are pretty good for the most part (with a few exceptions) and the story, while not great, isn't edgy in the least. I just beat the sixth gym leader.

Yea all it does is force in a new really ugly type that your Pokémon can be infected by and have absolutely awful Fakemon. People hype up Uranium so much but it’s really not enjoyable. Reborn was enjoyable in a tongue in cheek way - you go into it expecting severe and ridiculous edge, you enjoy it partly for that edge, you give your mind edgy nicknames.

What annoys me about Reborn is that it ticks so many boxes for me like multiple trainer sprite choices, no fakemon and the setting just being one huge city (I'm a sucker for this sort of thing). But the rest is just so fucking awful to the point it is impossible to look passed it.

Are there any actual good fangames? I always ignored the fangame scene as it didn't really interest me, but I'd like a new Pokemon experience. I've heard good things about Gaia and Crystal Clear but those are really the only two I know of.
