All these Pokemon MMO are just way too slow
After experiencing Pokémon in an emulator at 500+% speed and maybe even with randomizers to spice things up, it's hard to go back to a slow Pokémon game on PC

It's actually very fun to play, the only con is that it's basically the same old games copy pasted with multiplayer and no original content like in PRO and Pokeone, but the game feels more like a community and less like a glorified single player MMO like most pokemon MMO fangames.

The modern Pokemon mmo games are miles ahead of what other pokemon mmo games did back in the days, but I can see why you wouldn't want to put a lot of time into it.

They've likely been aware of it's existence for a long time. If a small ROM hack like Prism got their attention, I don't see why PokeMMO didn't despite having been viral the first few months it was released.
They've also dealed with other MMO games like PokeOne by not allowing them to publish their download, but the server are still around, so I'm definitely sure they're aware of PokeMMO.
