You dont need to spend that much on a single card. Tarmogoyf is an overpriced piece of shit. For that one card you can build a deck. I built a modern deck called "Living End" for $80 and placed 4th at a SCG tourney where 2nd place spent over $1500 on his deck. Certain cards are also expensive for the sake of being expensive.

You have to understand that Tcgs don’t care about power creep since their official meta usually only contains the newest sets. If you compare base set cards with the cards of today the power creep would seem ridiculous, but actual players don’t feel that difference in the same way.
