The real problem is: presents a strong rival. Gives the protagonist a power he can't handle yet. Spent the whole season learning with his defeats (to the strong rival) and becoming better. Masters his new power. Still loses to the same guy.

It sounds like there is no development. Like we just went full circle for nothing.

That was the executives. It was very clearly written with the outcome being that Greninja would use the Orange Shuriken to defeat Alan's Charizard and make Ash the Champion. It was the, "he can't win," faggot from up top that forced the ending the be rewritten into the shit we got.
