IVs were a mistake. I enjoy the idea of every Pokémon feeling 'a little bit different' so that entire species of Pokémon aren't carbon-copies of each other, but this clearly isn't the way to do it. What's a better way?

Make "variations" on pokemon by changing the size and features like a Vaporeon with longer fins. Since modeling is very simple this is a easy fix.

I'd be okay with it, as long as they were actually neato and pretty cool. It'd be fun and fresh if, instead of adding a new batch of critters, we got to experience every Pokémon we know all over again in a new light.

Having some kind of IV total limit would fix this.

I would probably also make eggs inherit the average of their parent's IVs +/- a random number that's weighted to bring the value back to average.

As for your post, have the area you capture your ‘mon in dictate their starting moves. A ‘mon should know moves to take out the local wildlife.

Nah, there's not bad because you get to customize them fully. They allow you to specialize.

There's room to do the concept better though. There's literally no reason not to have an Alakazam with 252 Sp. Att. and Speed.

You need both. Not only does it need a - defense nature but you also gotta have 15 or so defense IVs make it lower than the attack.

EVs are actually a neat concept in conjuction with natures.
I like how some Pokemon can be excellent tanks with one spread and good offensively with another.

Can anyone think of a way to make EVs more interesting? I don't like how they currently encourage thoughtless minmaxing but I don't have a clue how to improve them.

The EV system as is has 0 use for casual play since you’ll have rounded stats from all the com’mons you beat up. After that, make Pokemon harder and have distinct strategies from the antangonists so you’ll have to contemplate your stats.

That just means you're now encouraged to minmax even in casual play.
I'm talking about a change to the underlying system to make it more interesting than "pick two stats to max out and then put an extra point into literally any other stat."

If you favor offense you get more attacking moves, defense for buffs/debuffs, speed for priority and baton pass.

For offensive pokemon there isn't really a way of doing that.
You will always want max speed to at least speed tie with opponents that have the same pokemon if the match ever comes down to that.
Max Atk/SpA is also necessary and any defensive investment doesn't make much difference because offensive Pokemon are typically frail regardless.

Defensive Pokemon don't have such cookie cutter spreads and they get more specialized as the meta progresses.
For example Celesteela early on just ran max HP/SpD but now they run enough defense to live a mega medichams HJK or you can run 248HP/104 Def/156 SpD to handle mega pinsir better while still beating lele.

aren't EVs based on the idea of gaining specific experience and thus becoming more effective at fighting certain types of mons (fast, tanky, whatever) as you defeat more of them? really with both IVs and EVs they just need to become more tangible in general, rather than just some numbers buried in a data structure that you'd never notice if you didn't give a shit about competitive play.
