From what I understand most of the hate comes from the Pokemon designs and linearity. If you don't have a problem with those, it's a pretty good gen.
Also don't listen to people who say it's perfect/the worst. Like every other Gen it has its ups and downs and it's worth playing with an open mind.

People think it's bad because you can't use old Pokemon in BW until you beat the E4.

It was pretty good but some people hated that the main story locked you out of gen 1-4 pokemon, while BW2 had old gens they wouldn't make sense unless you played BW

>region being shaped like a circle
>no new fancy gimmick
>ice cream and garbage bag existing

Controversial reasons that depends on your tastes
>new aesthetics and animated sprites
>much more story-focused approach compared to previous games and the contents of the story itself
>no old pokemon available until completing the E4
>with no old pokemon the new pokedex could potentially put you off playing if you cannot find enough pokemon you wish to use as nobody wants to play with pokemon they do not enjoy
