i seriously dont know how native english speakers dont cringe at the name of half of the pokemons, for me the words that they use to make the names dont come instantly since it isnt my first language, but when trying to get the etymology most of them are dumb as shit

Most pokemon names are just fine, the only real outliers are some of the gen 1 Pokemon (fucking Seel, really?). I've almost never had a problem understanding the etymology of most of the names either, it's probably just an ESL problem.

It's stupid for a different reason. Thunder and Fire are common loanwords, and naming Zapdos/Moltres meant that no Ability or move could use サンダー or ファイヤー in the name or risk confusion of association with Zapdos or Moltres. So GameFreak forever locked itself out of naming flexibility due to two Pokemon in an old regional dex.

By comparison, Articuno's name is slightly different, so some attacks can use "フリ" without confusion, like フリーズボルト

No they didn't. There's both a Pokemon and a type called "Ghost"
