They're spikes but I assume they're supposed to represent the tethers that would connect a real cocoon to branches and the like.

It's intended to be hanging from a tree or something. Hence why it lacks the "spikes" in the anime and its 3D model. They aren't spikes, they're the tethers connecting it to the tree.
