I haven’t played pokemon since emerald but now I have a lot of free time and I want to play the newer ones.
Is W&B1 and 2 any good or should I just skip it and buy a 3DS and get Sun or Moon?

Gen 5 is usually considered the best in the series, but it's also the most divisive so you'll get a lot of people telling you it's shit. At the very least you should emulate BW1 and then, if you like it, buy BW2.

USUM is good but has a ton of problems and is one of the least replayable games in the series so it also gets a lot of hate. I'd say play it after BW2; you need a 3DS for Pokemon Bank if you want to transfer your gen 5 mons to gen 8 anyway.

Gen 8 was confirmed for Switch and is coming out this year. We don't know anything else about it though.

Do not buy Sun/Moon or X/Y, they will be a disappointment. Play the DS games.
