The gen 3 Sugimori art has aged very well. If you're going to do the soul vs soulless meme at least use the dream world art.

The saturated colors and lack of contrast makes me think of Neopets.

You're aware that both versions are drawn by Sugimori, right? He just took in new, modern drawing, coloring, shading techniques.

And the old ones may look cooler but that' just because they're posing. The new ones were drawn simply facing the camera, but they could be drawn the same way.

Oh I don't mean just the watercolour. I enjoy Sugimori's Gen 5 and 6 artwork. But Gen 7 had Ohmura do it, and it looks too plastic-like and cartoony that it looks jarring compared to the others

anyone can make a sprite on ms paint, and with a little effort you can make it look decent. that no budget shit doesn't apply here. it's not a 20 minutes long 12 episode animation a la kemono friends. it's literally just drawing 2 still pictures (not even animated) for each pokémon, that's it. if they were going to half-ass it they could at least do it on model. most pokémon don't even look like they're supposed to look.

Sugimori's art here works better, because you can see the arm of Squirtle coming out of the shell, with an opening, instead in the new artwork it looks like its sticked in the shell itself and doesn't have any opening.
