So you'd have to get into a trainer battle, level up against an earlier mon, and then have it faint to a later one.

yes, and its dex entries talk about it being ill-tempered and angry, meaning that zebstrika being dark type is more logically sound than luxray being dark type

I've been thinking of a bug/dark assassin spider.

Since bug and dark both have "tricky" moves, it could have a moveset more for secondary effects and switching control

Sticky web, u turn, lunge, pursuit, knock off, sucker punch, etc. It would still probably be PU since it's not a great type and it's weak to stealth rock, but it would still be fun to use. Especially if they made it frail/fast/powerful which I can easily imagine for an assassin spider

fire grass - obviously something spicy. if not then maybe something tiki inspired like aku aku or a dry savannah or shrubland plant. could also do a spin on that forest fire mascot bear

ghost rock - tombstone, living shrine or maybe take on stone henge
fight fairy i feel like an angry baby would suffice
plenty of legendary ones need to be reused
