They have not, do not, and will not give a fuck about how long it's been since the last mainline game. Pokemon is a yearly franchise that relies extremely heavily on its marketing campaign in order to give people good impressions about the new Pokemon, new characters, new locations and new mechanics. The longer the campaign, the better, because this makes people more attached to the aforementioned before they finally get their hands on the games so they can actually look forward to the new things, and this in turn can potentially turn them into merchandise-buyers for said new things, which in turn is used along with anime reception to decide who should be marketed and given merchandise more to assure maximum profits from merchandising.
