Any animal has the potential to do harm - intentionally or otherwise - and keeping large dogs and small children is a stupid combination. The baby's arms would have been free and there is every chance it could have just hit it in the face or poked its eyes.
They were stupid to keep a large and powerful breed of dog when they had toddlers in the house. Simple as that. If they wanted to raise pitbulls, they should have done so at a different point in their life and to have three of them is ridiculous. A dog that size could kill an infant just by jumping in its crib ffs. If a cat had scratched its face there wouldn't be anywhere near the amount of uproar because a cat is a far more appropriate sized animal to keep as a pet when you have young children. Even then they are prone to scratch and bite when irritated and a childs prodding and grabbing would be exactly that.
tl;dr: if you have young children dont keep large animals as pets
