Gen 6's Starters are based on the classic Warrior/Wizard/Thief RPG Trio, but Gen 7's aren't quite certain.
My guess is that they're based on various talents, more specifically in Japan (Kyūdō, Heel Wrestler based on Tiger Mask, Idol).
