I think gen 4 had the worst, the cross gen evos were pretty hit or miss for me, and even the actual gen 4 mons were kinda whatever, at least compared to other gens since I generally like them all

Gen 5 designs may clash when put next to other gens, but on their own they make for some kind of urban cartoony style that works great in a region like Unova based on NY city, wich led to a unique experience. It was like a stylized spin-off.
I was dissapointed when I started finding mons from previous gens, I wanted to find more new stuff. I wish we could have another self contained experience like this in the future.

What the fuck are you talking about, gen 3 was widely (and unfairly so) hated among the normalfag part of the public (aka the majority) at the time due to the lack of backwards compatibility and the overall changes in design style leading to the first faggots ever to start claiming "GF is running out of ideas" since then.
It wasn't until gen4 that most of the kanto nostalgiakids had truly dropped out of the franchise and the fanbase that continued playing the series started to appreciate Hoenn more for the things that it did right.

We've already answered this too many times over the years:
- Sugimori and other lead artists said they had huge artist block and wanted to compensate by, in his words, "making pokemon that subverts people's expectations"
- Using shitty design decisions that they outgrew by Gen 2 such as pokemon that evolve just by growing an extra head or having slightly more fur
- too many blatant Kanto ripoffs
- Despite claiming to want players to only experience new pokemon, BW were released with terribly limited distribution, which allowed players to make more judgments on promoted designs

Gen3 sold great, but Pokemon hasn't never come back to be as popular as it was during Pokemania (gen1-2) and the sales in the pic show just that. And all the generations past Hoenn have had the same general reception, with the usual people shit talking it but selling around 16 none the less. So talking like gen3 was some "new peak" in the series when it was actually the exact same as gen4-7 makes no sense.
GF was scared not because they thought it would sell less but still great, which is what happened, but because they thought it would be a complete failure and the series was done. Luckily, they were wrong and the series continued healthy.

To claim it "revitalized" pokemania only shows that you don't know what pokemania was.

Reminds me of when I was a kid trying to design a pokedex, but would just go through the official dex for 'inspiration' and come out with a dex of knockoffs. A Venus flytrap frog, a magma dinosaur, a terrapin, a lunar moth, etc. Weird to see official design following derivative preteen creativity. A few homages would have been ok.
