I would have taken mini Kanto if it meant we got a region inspired by all of Japan, with unique tilesets for nearly every town. The games that followed could have been radically different.

This. One of the reasons I dropped the series after Diamond and Pearl is because the day/night cycle was basically pointless going forward from there. It still is to this day.

I grew up with RBY and GSC. When RSE came out I thought it looked like shit. The pokemon sprites are amateur, inaccurate and make too many pokemon uglier than they actually are, and the overworld looks amateur. Honestly a downgrade from GSC.

it's been a long while since I've played them, but IMO aesthetics increased from gen 1 to 4 with HGSS being the peak, power gaps between gen 1-2 and 3-4
I grew up with Pearl and HG so I might be biased here
