How do you feel about having more than 8 gym leaders. Let's say 10 or 12. It would give GF an excuse to make the region bigger with more areas to explore that means a bigger dex a d more time to pick and choose mons for your team.

I'd rather have free choice and level scaling
Gym leaders are only a symbolic challenge---monotype teams have never been difficult to defeat.
Thus having more of them adds nothing.

In fact, I'd sooner they start making teams like Steven's than add more of the same.

your enemies are the exact same as your allies
the only significant difference are your strategies
Pokemon can't give opponents huge stat benefits like a typical JRPG---see Gen VII for what happens when Pokemon still tries to do so

Botw style where you can traverse the region how you want and battle the gym leaders in any order, story events fold out differently according to the path you choose.

Themes are far more interesting than types. Foreman or tradesman with Ground,Rock,Steel,and fighting types. Programmer with Electric, Psychic, and Normal Types. Explorer with Grass, Water, Rock, and Ground types. Etc.
