Pokémon just needs free camera and actual dungeons with puzzles. Keep the S/M artstyle, don't dumb down the combat and you got a perfect game.

I wish Capcom had done a better job at marketing Stories, it's one of the few games that I think could have had an actual chance of putting a real dent in Pokémon's armor if they'd tried.
