After USUM one should: a new set of Pokémon (Starters, fillers, Legendaries) and a new Pokédex = new Gen
However, there is no clear definition of Generation. New Pokémon is part of it.

Generations are eras of the franchise marked by a core game (as defined by Game Freak, not "muh feels") with a new story (can also be a sequel, just not a rehash of the same plot) set in a new region with its own regional Pokédex containing a significant number of new Pokémon ("significant" meaning more than fucking five) including new starters. A game meeting all of these criteria begins a new generation, and any core game released before the next game to meet these criteria is part of that same generation. Pokémon belong to the generation of the first core game they're obtainable in; those introduced in spinoffs do not belong to any generation until they're confirmed to be obtainable in a core game. This is the only objectively correct definition of a generation, and by this definition USUM and LGPE (and the Pokémon they introduced) belong to the seventh generation; newmonfags, compatibilityfags and enginefags need not apply.

GameFreak and The Pokemon Company can redefine things in an instant, and all of your effort explaining everything is null and void.
They can say the Trubbish line is now a Gen 1 Pokemon by OFFICIALLY categorizing it with Gen 1 Pokemon in the Bank, and we'll all have to fucking sit there and accept it until they decide to redefine everything again.

They could have redone Kanto as the beginning of Gen 8 if they'd wished because what would matter is under the hood, not YOUR feelings about arbitrary things which happen to be true but do not have to be.
