So what was the point of this Pokemon exactly?

Mono type isn't inherently bad. Especially when it was a rare monotype, and the only monotype at its inception.

Monotype is only bad in cases where there's already so many that it's redundant, such as Water or Normal.

I actually love Grass type, but it was bad as a mono-type in Gen1.
Mono grass started to be good in Gen3.

Not sure if this would make the evolution OP, but imo I think hidden abilities should be Pokemon-specific. Make each Pokemon viable in some way.

It was the first generation, lots of stuff didn't work and there wasn't really a 'point' to anything. The entire dragon, ghost, and bug types were also basically worthless.

It was just a random monster you'd come across. Pokemon back then weren't designed with the mindset of making everything viable, they were just some cool monsters you came across and could capture. Some were good, some were ass. It's why Onix has such bad stats, it's a tutorial to teach the player that hitting Tackle won't beat the game for you.

had his use with growth in lower tiers in the first 2 generations, but anything weak to ice with a shit move pool would get dumped on easily by a lot of pokemons.

This. Not all pokemon are supposed to be viable, some of them ate just there for the world building. You catch to collect em, i think gamefreak should make an upgraded pokemon ranch type game, but more in the vein of harvest moon. It would be glorious, and then all the non competitive mons would have a place to stay and possibly jobs to do. Tangela could a helper in the gardens tending the berry trees or in the kitchen with jynx making poffins and such.

Pokemon still aren't designed with the mindset to make everything viable. The games are very much single-player campaigns with multiplayer balance as a second thought.

More mindful but not more effective. I think it was Morimoto who mentioned that people running mixed/special Aegislash surprised him because he didn't expect people to use sets like that on it despite it having 150 special attack, Shadow Ball, and Flash Cannon. The devs in general were also surprised that M-Kangaskhan ended up being so popular.

This. One thing I could say to Genwunners that would make sense to them is that new Pokemon gave us more Dragon and Ghost types beyond Dragonite and Gengar, and Bugs became more useful with awesome Pokemon like Scizor, Heracross, Galvantula, Volcarona, and Golisopod.

This. Wish one thing Genwunners could give new Gens to is how they expanded the types. New Pokemon gave us more Dragon and Ghost types beyond Dragonite and Gengar, and Bugs became more useful with Pokemon like Scizor, Heracross, Galvantula, Volcarona, and Golisopod.

So I'm thinking he just throws in random moves to the move pool that make at least a little sense? I dunno about that. I'm sure it was intended, even if it's not as strong as a physical attacker, it was still made to be a viable special attacker. Aegislash was made to be more of a tricky Pokemon, unpredictable rather.
