With genwunnersI find even those that only attach themselves to the series excusable because of how massive Pokémon was at the time. There are a lot of us who started with the first gen that are tired of Kanto as well.
With Gen 2 the series was still very "hot", and even though these games at the time were seen as going to be the last iteration they were very well done. A lot of interesting mechanics were introduced including breeding/nightday cycles/friendship/berries/etc(I could go on but I won't), the region was designed as a nice contrast to the first as it pulled from more of the actual Japanese culture and history than Kanto did, and the story felt like a genuine continuation of the world previously established.
But gen 3 seemed to wildly throw itself off course from the series, to its detriment. I know this is the first gen directed by masuda, and that he was trying to prove himself, but it seemed to be a massive fumble. Basic mechanics that were later reintroduced were removed like the Night-Day cycles, the story seemed to twist into a perversion of "kid goes on an adventure to be a pokémon trainer, finds a bit of trouble along the way but because of their skill they win" to "kid is chosen to save the world from unfathomable godlike forces threatening the end of humanity.".
