Duh, the reason so many trainers in Gen 1 had whips is because of the scrapped idea of trainers being able to fight on their own without Pokemon

That idea was scrapped, but they didn't have time to remove the whips until the remakes

Beta Red was originally designed as a kid who grew up to train exclusively mini-kaiju

Beta Red was in a world where the capsule monsters were all very dangerous, scary freaks that were probably barely able to be wrangled into a state somewhat resuming being ""trained""

Beta Red was designed for a game that would've made even the freakiest parts of the manga and early anime/games seem cute in comparison

The whips were for training the Pokemon to submit to the trainer. The original idea was that Pokemon trainers battled other Pokemont trainer's Pocket Monsters, and like in horse racing or lion taming, the trainers would use a whip on their own Pokemon. They obviously scrapped this because it's a childrens game and just made it so that trainers and their Pocket Monsters bond through the Pokeball.

love and softness is a proper message for kids dealing with mostly small and rarely very harmful creatures. whips, however, would have been a BARE MINIMUM for dealing with miniature but still frightening and destructive kaiju as Capumon would've been

I remember some thread quoted the creator apparently saying that they did in fact plan to do that but then thought that there wouldn't be any reason to have a pokemon if they could defend themselves, so they scrapped it.
