discharge is still the superior move though and electabuzz learns it naturally. its then less potent when it evolves into the physical attacker, which is a rather unsatisfying feeling that you have to deliberately stick with the less damaging move to invest in the future evolution

Number 1) The physical-special split change. Some of Electabuzz's best coverage moves are now physical instead of special.

Number 2) To help distinguish it more from Magmortar, a dedicated special attacker. And

Number 3) Electivire looks like it would have more physical attack based on its massive meathead design.

Dragon type covers reptiles and mythical creatures like Altaria and seahorses like Kingdra.
Look at any reptile Pokémon, all of them learn dragon moves and many are in dragon egg group or dragon type.
