Skip SM and play USUM. It's currently the most content packed Pokemon game to date, with 800 mons and plenty of Legendaries to catch.

Platinum is a polished version of DP so play that. Play BW before BW2 because BW2 are direct sequels. Just play USUM because it's SM with more polish.

It's bad because the main campaign is still an interruption laced shitfest that doesn't respect the player's time at all and the level design is still the absolute worst in the series
Both are very fundamental issues in sm that they didn't even think of touching in usum and instead they added some minigames and called it a day. It's a terrible third version that only serves to add a little bit of difficulty and nothing else of value

every game since gen 5 has crammed dialogue down your throat, gen 7 point stands out because they have angles during dialogue
I'm playing bw right now and there are so many little interruptions, every time you are in a new area, even in the middle of a dungeon...
dialogue is just a part of the games

Not him but 5 is pretty popular, just more so for the characters and story rather than the mons and actual game. Personally I find it rather lackluster but I know why it has it's fans.
Gym design is also top notch in that gen.
