I refuse to accept pokemon talking by saying their own name. Especially as even the anime plays loose with it and a lot of larger mons just roar. Cries or nothing.

Anime and games are different canons silly. The anime is cheaply made as well since it’s basically an ongoing advertisement for merch. Drawing moving environments involves more frames of animation which requires paying the animators more, so its cost effective to just have shit materialise out of thin air like that.

Fish just flop. It's why they don't really use fish for trainers since Misty. Although you could argue Stunfisk with Cilan but that thing wants you to step on it so it can deliver shocks and it somehow managed flight anyway.

The Pokemon are named after their cries dumbass, not the other way around.
Incineroar's jap name is GAOGAEN and gao is the onomatopoeia for a roar. Lions in Japan go GAO, not RAWR.

The Jap anime does it better, while some Pokémon like Pikachu always use their own name, Pokémon like the alola starters, Mimikyu and Togedemaru makes animal noises.

Then, the only explanation for different names to the same Pokemon, is they make different noises depending on where they are. So, if you make a trip from England to Germany going though France, your Pokemon change their cries to adapt it to their geographic location

Mons shouting their own name is a thing because making up 800+ animal sounding "voices" fit for a recuring character is expensive a'd it makes it easier for the kids to learn and recognize those 800+ names

I've always hated how the anime portrays Hydro Cannon as just small blasts of water rather than a Hyper Beam-esque blast, it doesn't have the feeling of power that I imagined in the games.

Nah, Pokémon is made with a Japanese audience in mind. Non-jap speakers are just filthy secondaries that will buy the game no matter what so there's no need for there to be any effort made towards the international audience. Or its the localization teams that can't be arsed to come up with proper translations. Take your pick.

Is that really different from a tiny Squirtle firing fat jets of water or a Toxicroak firing a wave of darkness energy (Dark Pulse)? Projectile attacks are pretty much all bullshit, but being unable to use Rock attacks because there's no rock on the battlefield would be a strange nerf.

I always thought the reason why the anime shifted to making all the attacks glowy energy shit that gets generated on the spot, aside from ease of animation, is just so that it looks less violent for their target audience. Stay at home moms are gonna have less problems with Rattatas generating glowing energy teeth in thin air than if the Rattata actually graphically bites the opponent, because glowy energy attacks aren't imitable in real life. See Pokemon Origins or Pokemon Generations if you want more realistic Pokemon combat to base your headcanon off of.

It's easy to have a suspension of disbelief for magic energy bullshit since we have nothing in real life to compare it to.
