Nope, they weren't. You can tell they're having more fun with the Pokemon in SM.
SM is actually the best of the anime when it comes to creatively showing a Pokemon's biology and quirks. Instead of "glowing energy" for Bullet Seed, Toucannon spit up the small pebbles that some birds swallow to aid with grinding down food/digestion. Rowlet learned Seed Bomb by doing this with an Everstone. Charjabug especially was a delight.
The SM anime is the most lively Pokemon has ever been, at the cost of some of its standard pseudo-shounen elements. Which is good because it was always extremely cheesy when Pokemon got too serious.

Based. I couldn't have said it better.

I wish the few important battles we get were a better, though. I like that they're not the focus of the series, but if they absolutely have to show some battles then at least do a better job at it. Nanu's trial was disappointing and Hapu's was baddy bad.

SM is the first series since OS where I'd rather watch the "fillers" than the "important" episodes.

My thoughts exactly. I love SM anime for shit like this, battles can look pretty bland and less epic than XY but the characters and Pokémon have more personality, e. g. I was tired of Team Rocker but now I love them like when I was a kid

True, but much less often and not to the same level of fun that SM puts into it.
I think of previous seasons and wonder "If Charjabug existed then, they COULD'VE made Charjabug chug like a little generator when it moves, but they probably wouldn't have. They probably wouldn't have put it in a go-kart either."
Also real talk: Mamane screwed the pooch evolving his- Now he can't participate in Charjabug races or use it as a battery unless he somehow gets a new one.

Not since OS, I'd reckon the executives and TPC loosened the grip on what can and can't be written and animated in the anime since the Alola Anime is a Wacky Slice of Life.

I doubt it. Knowing this season, I bet Togedemaru will act as the generator, or hell maybe he will catch another one. Mallow did get a fucking Shaymin so really, who knows what's going to happen.

I noticed they devote much more special attention to the character acting scenes involving pokemon. In the past human-human scenes or human-pokemon scenes had almost all the focus.

Lana got the promotional Eevee for LGPE
Lillie has an ice Z crystal despite having no Z ring
Kiawe caught an Alolan Marowak without needing to evolve it from a Cubone
Sophocles has nothing too special but a bunch of good episodes like one death and the another about racing Charjabugs
Ash even held onto Poipole after he caught it for some time before sending it back to its dimension
Also everyone technically has a fully evolved pseudo legendary ride pokemon
SM truly gives no fucks about who gets what

There's only one fully-evolved pseudo in that bunch, Ash's Garchomp. Sophocles has a Metang, which is a NFE pseudo, and Lana has a Dragonair, another NFE pseudo. Mallow and Lillie got Flygon and Altaria, neither one of which is in any way a pseudo.
