I think it's a combination of those things and the lack of a third version. The generation was as long as most but they didn't do much with it and there was even a gap year.

There won't be a Gen 7 MD because the MD team is working on some other project. Plus:
Blue - DS
Sky - DS
Infinity - 3DS
Super - 3DS

It's Switch time. Switch is Gen 8.

I think the lack of a third version is what really hurts gen VI. It's the only generation where I outright felt like I was playing incomplete games. I still had fun with them personally but something was just missing.
