>Games takes place approximately 3000 years before the Gen 1-7 games in England-like region.
>Setting is primarily medieval, but there are pseudo-technologies present (usually handwaived away by magic crystals)
>Plot revolves around the war and ultimate weapon mentioned in XY (basically Hundred Years' War pokemon style)
>You are the Prince/ss of the region, tasked with rallying the vassal houses against Kalos and King AZ
>Gym leaders are replaced by Counts, and you tour the land battling them for their Crests and support in the war
>Main villain is King AZ and plot revolves around stopping him from using the weapon to control the world once he fires it in the second half of the game
>Team/Gang this time are an Order of Knights, not the enemy this time around but a group you team up with.
>No Kalos postgame, but you travel to NW Kalos as part of the story (Geosenge Town area)
>The actual war in the game is pretty sanitized, treated as if it's one big open Pokemon melee.

>Catching pokemon is more complex, including many pokemon who respond to non-violent methods.
>Pokeballs don't properly exist in this time period, your entire team follows you in the open.
>Friendship mechanic overhauled, mistreated pokemon (fainted too often, never played with) can run away.
>You don't simply pick your starter, but is an involved quest explaining the new mechanics and the Partner system.
>There are still a Fire/Water/Grass trio to choose from, but also other starters to choose from (Eevee is one).
>Several type changes and reassignments to older pokemon happen, explained as "ancestral forms".
